The popular auction house Christie’s has planned to auction a rare lot of Cryptopunk non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles in New York next month. The sample of work sold will be approximately nine rare Punks, courtesy of the project’s creators Larva Labs.
On 13th May, 2021, Christie’s, the British auction house renowned world over and founded in 1766 by James Christie, revealed its NFTs plans.
The auction house told that it has planned to auction nine unique NFTs from the Cryptopunk project that are one of a kind. Christie’s has said that the occasion will be the first of its kind as it would be ground-breaking. Particularly, because the sale of NFTs hasn’t ever been offered from Christie’s auction house. The auction house further told that for the creation of NFTs comprising of nine Punks, Christie engaged the famous Larva Labs.
Noah Davis, a specialist in Post-War & Contemporary Art at Christie’s, New York stated that the Cryptopunks are the pioneers of art movement involving crypto. He further added during the announcement that the sale of nine Punks is going to be something which would not be forgotten.
The creative minds of John Watkinson and Matt Hall combined to come up with the idea of Cryptopunks project 4 years ago in 2017. Larva Labs, the New York-based firm that started and currently own, has created thousands of NFT characters since its inception. While the Cryptopunks were launched by Larva Labs in June, 2017. There are approximately 10,000 Punks in circulation today, with some of these Punks being sold in the market for multiple thousand dollars.
The auction house has said that of the Punks created by Larva Labs, it will be auctioning certain collection of Punks.
It was further revealed that a rare collectible character of an alien would also be put up for sale. The auction of rare alien is also scheduled to be held on the 13th of May this year. Cryptopunk 635 is regarded as one of the most unique Punks, and is coveted the world over as a collectible. This is for the reason that Cryptopunk 635 is one of only nine alien Punks ever made, whilst also being the only one with a sub-1,000 series number.
Furthermore, whilst elaborating on the other Punks being sold by them, Christie’s said that Punks 532 and 602 also held significant cultural value. It told that both of them were inspired by the London punk scene that took place in 70s and 80s.
Christie’s announcement read that Cryptopunks has inspired a community of collectors and connoisseurs. Those who are interested in acquiring collectibles, it was similar to trading cards. They further added that an appealing factor to some was its flexible perception and that it brought several worlds under one roof.
